My Story – “Aha” Moment

In 1996 I was diagnosed with cervical cancer, and I underwent a hysterectomy. Following the surgery, I was unable to exercise for several months. By the time I recovered, I had lost the exercise habit, and I was comforting myself with food. The weight crept back on gradually until one day several years later I looked at a photo of myself and realized “I’m so fat!”

This time, though, I remembered how I had lost weight in San Francisco. I remembered how I had changed my self-talk and my behavior around eating and exercise. During my recovery from surgery, I had begun to read many health and self-help authors like Norman Cousins, Wayne Dyer, Napolean Hill, Louise Hay, Shakti Gawain, and Andrew Weil, M.D.

I had an “Aha!” moment: “I successfully lost weight before, and I know how I did it. I can do it again, and this time it will be even easier because I know more about what makes me tick.”

Within six months I lost several clothing sizes and felt more confident, healthy and vibrant than I had ever felt. And I am still a size 4 almost a decade later.
